Students make and sell T-shirts to raise money for fund memorializing the two sisters, who had attended school there. The undertaking is successful and the Julianne and Emily Hendrickson Fund for Children is born.

Belmar, NJ A community gathers to create a butterfly meditation garden with hand painted murals to honor the lives of Julianne and Emily Hendrickson.

The Julianne and Emily Hendrickson Fund for Children teams up with LongAcre Expeditions, a Brielle, New Jersey-based company specializing in adventure travel for teens to offer a week-long experiential learning trip for disadvantaged kids.

The Fund “adopts” students from the Academy Charter High School (ACHS) in Lake Como, New Jersey as participants in the first Fund-supported adventure.

The meditation garden is officially dedicated to Julianne and Emily with acoustical guitar music and poetry readings in the garden. A Family BBQ, Silent Auction and live music follows at Bar Anticipation. The event raises nearly $30,000.00.

More than 500 people participate in what is hoped to be the “largest hokey-pokey ever”. Proceeds go directly to the Julianne and Emily Hendrickson Fund for Children. The Hokey Pokey raises approximately $3,500.00.

Lavendar Moon hosts “Jewels and Gems of the Jersey Shore”, a seven-hour musical showcase featuring young local musicians with featured guest Eric Ginsberg. The teenaged friends of Julianne and Emily organize the event. Donations total more than $840.00.

30 students from ACHS take a trip to Eastern Mountain Sports in Eatontown, NJ, to get fitted for hiking boots for their upcoming outdoor adventure with LongAcre Expeditions.

Departure is planned for the first Fund-sponsored trip as 30 incoming Seniors from ACHS join Longacre Expeditions for a week spent hiking the Appalachian Trail and working on an organic farm.

Scholarship fund started in memory of Hendricksons

The Sea Girt PTO recently established a high school scholarship fund in memory of Julianne and Emily Hendrickson, who died in a a plan crash last August in Sitka, Alaska.

A memorial garden in the girls names will be dedicated on June 8 at 2:30 pm behind Lavendar Moon, 1006 Main Street, Belmar.

After the dedication, a barbeque fund raiser for the scholarship fund will be held at Bar Anticipation,16th Avenue, Lake Como, from 4 to 8pm.

Community garden, mural are unveiled

On Friday November 2, friends, family volunteers and well wishers of the community project to create a meditation garden honoring the late Julianne and Emily Hendrickson assembled at the site of the garden, which is located behind Lavender Moon, on Main Street, in Belmar.

Those in attendance participated in a brief ceremony to publicly introduce the garden and unveil the first of five murals to be painted throughout the garden.

Both Julianne and Emily lost their lives this past summer in a plane crash in Alaska.

Sarah Sharp, 15, of Sea Girt said she knew Julianne Hendrickson well; they were classmates at Sea Girt Elementary School. So she was devastated when she heard about her friend's sudden death.

"Losing Julianne was really a hard thing. She was always really nice, always smiling and fun to be with," Sharp said.

Fourteen-year-old Julianne Hendrickson and her 11-year-old sister, Emily, were killed in a plane crash Aug. 6 in Sitka, Alaska. Their father, Robert Hendrickson, 45, of Spring Lake Heights, and his fiancee, Linda Khudair, 34, of Wall, also were killed.

A hokey pokey event to support the Julianne and Emily Hendrickson Fund for Children took place Saturday afternoon at the Fifth Avenue boardwalk and beach. Saturday marked the first time the event was put on, said Lu Stierman, an event coordinator, and it is planned to become annual.
